Ideas and Tips For Holding a Kids Halloween Party

Halloween is a time to get together with friends and to be at ones creative best. It is a perfect time for a party with all the costumes, candy, scary characters and decorations both inside and out. There are two main Halloween parties one for kids and one for adults. The format may be different but many things are the same.
This article will look at the one for kids.
How about one for the brave or fearless kids who love something a little scary and a good ghost story and an evening filled with ghostly events. This has been called a Spooktacular party night.
For Decorations how about:
- A mood that is dark and haunted. All valuable or breakable items should be put away so that you can have worry free scavenger hunts with appropriate scary places.
- A lot of spider webs, creeping vines, skeletons, hanging bats, jack-o-lanterns. and any Halloween dummies that you can rent or borrow,
- You can also make special trunks and coffins out of painted cardboard boxes. This would make a good idea for a pre Halloween construction party for the children’s parents.
- Artificial colored lights with black dripping candles and black streamers on floors and wall will add to the dark and sinister effects.
For Music:
- For the ghost stories find some eerie sound effects or even record your own.
- At some time in the evening have a lively time and play music that fits the occasion. Such as “Monster Mash”, Munsters Theme song”‘, Purple People Eater”, and “Ghostbuster”. Even have the words available and make it into a scary sing-a-long.
For Munchies:
- Spooky snacks that children will eat such as cakes and cookies that are shaped like ghosts, withes, pumpkins, bones, spiders etc. Be creative and find you own shapes.
- Halloween punch with floating hands or fingers made from surgical gloves filled with red or blue water and previously frozen.
- Gooey sandwiches filled with an assortment of gelatin, cream cheese, peanut butter, jelly worms and other such items that you can find.
For Games and prizes:
- Give a prize for the best center stage imitation of something in the ghost stories.
- Prizes for the best costume. Have each child act out their character and actually give a prize to every actor. Be non judgmental.
- Prizes can be in keeping with the party. Halloween costumes, old keys, ghost story books, small Halloween items such as monsters, spiders, fake worms, rubber eyeballs, fake goo, fake fangs, glow in the dark items etc.
- Have a treasure hunt. Make some prizes easy to find and others buried in scary places.
- If this party is in place of the door to door candy gathering then make sure you have candy hunts and a bag in which each child can keep their treasure. Ensure that the bags are named and top them up when each child leaves.
I Hope this has set your creative mind churning. Halloween parties are becoming a replacement for the traditional door knocking. They are looked on as being safer than having children running around our unsafe streets. You will need other parents involved as supervision is a must if you are going to let the children run around you house.
This article is long enough so I will write an adult Halloween Party article tomorrow. Remember any party needs prior planning in detail and this is easier to do if you have reference to a generic check list that covers all eventualities.
Have a ghost of a time.
Parties are meant to be fun. Knowing how to plan for a party can take the stress out of being a host. Most successful parties are planned and allow time for creativity. Leaving no stone unturned is the first step to a memorable party. More information can be found at Planning for Other Occasions where you can also get a free mini-course on Party Planning.
