Attending a Halloween Party – Do’s and Dont’s

In the previous article the discussion was on you being the host of the Halloween party. However, the majority of people will not be hosting the party. Rather they and their children, or perhaps just their children, will be going to someone else’s party. It’s an opportunity to have a lot of fun and keep your kids in a safe environment without all of the risk associated with outdoor activities. Whether it’s a public haunted house or neighborhood trick-or-treating, you may very well have misgivings about such activities for your children, and so going to the Halloween party your child has been invited to is the best choice of all. First of all we should cover what should be done when you send your child to a Halloween party. You’ve probably received an invitation to the party, so the proper thing to do is to respond in the manner requested as early as you possibly can. Another thing you should do is to offer to help out in some way. Now, this does not mean that you should plan to attend the party yourself to work, just simply offer to send something with your child that might be needed. Paper plates, cups, napkins, anything you can think of to offer as a contribution to the party will be very much appreciated by the host, even if your offer is not accepted. Also, you will want to send your child to the party with the appropriate costume. Perhaps the host has not clarified this, so make a call and find out what is acceptable in costumes and what is not. This is a wonderful courtesy to extend to the host. He or she is putting a lot of effort into the event, and so anything you can do to make it easier will ensure that your child is invited back for all of the future events planned.

Now it’s time to talk a little bit about the don’t's. You really want to put some thought into this one and make sure everything goes well. It’s one thing to forget a courtesy, but it’s entirely another to do something so obviously out-of-place that the party’s quality is affected by your carelessness. So don’t be caught in this trap. Make sure you do not ignore details in the requests of the host. If a snack is required from each guest, don’t send your kid without one. Also, be sure not to get your child there late unless you’ve made the host aware of it before-hand. Another big no-no is to bring along someone who is not on the invitation list. If your 9 year old is the only one invited, don’t bring your 5 year old along too, unless you’ve cleared it with the host ahead of time.

A lot of this is really a matter of common courtesy and standard good social skills. Make sure you talk with your child about proper etiquette at the party.
