7 Favorite Halloween Family Fun Activities

Many activities take place the entire month of October. Halloween celebrates the Fall season and the beginning of the Holiday season.

My Seven Favorite Halloween Family Fun Activities are:

1. Apple Picking

Annual apple harvests usually take place just before Halloween. There are some orchards that let you pick your own. If there isn’t an apple orchard near you that has a pick your own activity, you can usually find apples at farmers markets. Candy and caramel apples are a popular Halloween treat that the whole family can make. Be sure to get plenty of apples. There are so many delicious apple recipes your family can make. Apple pies, apple butter, apple cider, and apple fritters are just a few delicious uses of apples.

2. Haunted Houses

Many people prepare all year long for visitors to come to their haunted house. Young and old alike can go through a house set up to scare and thrill them as they take a walk inside a frightening house of horrors. Amusement parks celebrate the Halloween season by creating haunted house adventures. These are usually open the entire month of October.

3. Hay Rides

A short driving distance from home you may be able to find a local farm that takes people for a ride down a scary road. The ride is usually on a flat wagon with hay bales to sit on. Most hayrides are pulled by a tractor instead of horses. Along the way are scary gobblins and ghosts to scare you. At the end of the ride there may be food and campfires where storytellers can have you nervously glancing over your shoulder.

4. Costume Parties

Costume parties are fun for both kids and adults. Games may include bobbing for apples. Apples are placed in a tub of water, hands are placed behind the back while you try to grab the apples with your teeth. Candied apples can be hung by strings from above while participants try to eat the sticky apples using just their mouth as their hands are kept behind their backs.

5. Carving Pumpkins

Pumpkins are often carved into decorative lanterns nicknamed jack-o’-lanterns. Carving faces on pumpkins is a great tradition. Make it a family affair and let the kids draw the face they want carved on the pumpkin. Special pumpkin carving tools can be found at a craft store. Then let the adults carve out the face. An alternative to carving the pumpkin is to Paint a face on it.

6. Painting Pumpkins and Gourds

Knives are dangerous in the hands of a child. Instead of carving the pumpkin, let them paint great faces on the pumpkin. Pumpkins aren’t the only things they can paint. Gather a big selection of different size gourds and paint creative characters on them. Be sure to use non-toxic paint for this activity.

7. Trick-or-Treat

The most common form of Halloween Celebration is Trick-or-treating for the children on Halloween. Children go in costume from house to house, asking for treats such as candy or sometimes money, with the question, “Trick or treat?” The word “trick” refers to a (mostly idle) threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. Adults can have fun by dressing up in their favorite disguise for greeting their trick-or-treat visitors.

What is the first thing you think of when you hear Halloween?

* Ghosts and witches

* Watching scary, horror movies

* Carved pumpkins and candied apples

* Hay rides and Corn Maize

* kids trick or treating

Those are just a few of the things that come to mind when thinking of Halloween. However you plan to celebrate Halloween, make sure it is a happy, fun and safe time for everyone.
