11 Fun and Safe Ideas For a Kids Halloween Party

Kids aren’t going to give up their Halloween fun just because trick or treating isn’t as carefree and innocent as it used to be. They can still go out with their friends, in a group with adult supervision, wearing their cool Halloween costumes and have a good, safe time.
- If the kids must go out door-to-door, drive them to each other’s homes, where they’ll go inside, have a snack, play some kids Halloween games and then move on the the next house.
- After they have visited everyone’s home, have the rest of the evening spent at the last home watching a scary movie and eating some of their goodies and some good Halloween homemade healthy snacks to go with all that candy.
- At the last house, set up a “fright” room that they have to go through to enter the house. It doesn’t have to be big, just fairly dark. Hang fake spiders and spider webs at the entrance that they have to brush against to enter. One yukky thing they did to us when I was a kid was to have a LARGE bowl full of cooked pasta (use your imagination when you pick the shape) that had been pre-cooked and was WET. We had to run our hands through the bowl, in the dark, and were told it was BRAINS!
- Play Halloween creepy music at the entrance to the fright room with moans and screams and spooky laughter, and stuff like that. Keep the room dark, just maybe a candle or two, so no one trips and gets hurt. Put cut-outs of skeletons that glow in the dark on the walls.
- Have a Pinata for the party so each kid gets a chance to hit it with a stick until it breaks open and all that candy falls to the floor. Let the littlest kids start first so it doesn’t get broken open by the big kids right at the beginning.
- Play some kids Halloween games and, depending on their ages, tried and true party games like Pin the Tail on the Donkey.
- Serve them some special Halloween party food, like cookies or cupcakes (more sugar!) decorated with orange and black icing, or a special Halloween sheet cake with a big black spider web and spider on top!
- Decorate the room for the party with Halloween party decorations such as carved pumpkins, ghosts, spiders in webs, witches on broomsticks, black cats, Halloween bats, and skeletons.
- For young teens who want to go trick or treating, organize a Treasure Hunt where they must go to each of their homes and search for a specific thing. Different parents or adults can drive two or three teens separately so they don’t all converge on one house at the same time!
- At each home, they can also “trick or treat” and, after they have found what the search item , they can return to the final home for their party.
- Ask at the local Mall if trick or treating is allowed. If it is, take all the kids there and have a kids Halloween party at one of the restaurants that host parties for kids.
These are just a few suggestions for a safe and sane kids Halloween party. With a little bit of imagination you can make Halloween memorable for your kids and start a new tradition to replace conventional trick or treating.
