Gourmet Grossness: Halloween Cuisine

Halloween is a time for creativity and breaking out of that everyday conformity. As the sun sets, your persona can be as crazy or as tranquil as you choose. There is no judgment. There are few rules. And why not let your palate experience that same festivity? What could be more fun for the kids (and maybe some of us adults, too) than a gross Halloween recipe or two?

After all, Halloween isn’t only about what we wear and how we sparkle, or why would all these kids bother going door-to-door determinedly filling their bags? Halloween is definitely about what we put in our mouths, and a gross Halloween recipe can certainly spice up a party or a dinnertime meal! How about some gelatin eyeballs? Or why not serve a bowl of cottage cheese with just enough blueberry juice to turn the curds a sickly gray color? Then all you need is a little bit of blue gelatin and voila! Brains are served!

Depending on the ages of the children you are serving, a little tomato juice can be a ‘blood’ base and small edible insects (made especially for Halloween and available at most party stores) can be frozen into ice cubes for that extra chill. A plate of chicken wings transform to bat wings and some bean sprouts in your hamburgers can be worms. With a little imagination, just about any meal or dessert can evolve into a gross Halloween recipe that will add that extra thrill for anyone brave enough to taste it!
