Candles have long been used in helping welcome or guide the dead during that night in hollowed-out pumpkins, known as jack-o-lanterns. Since the holiday is also directly related with the passing of Autumn into Winter, it makes sense that leaves, trees, and creeping spiders also represent Halloween. Through the passing of the centuries and cultures, the superstition of black cats being bad luck, witches, and ghosts have gradually become part of what we know as this spooky day of Halloween.
