Halloween is the time of year that many people have the most fun, because their imaginations take flight. In order to get into the spirit of the holiday, the knowledge of what are considered vintage Halloween decorations are a must. This goes for hosting your own party, or simply decorating your home for greeting the ghoulish trick-or-treaters that come to your door. Just what are vintage Halloween decorations? They are the many age-old symbols of Halloween. Think black cats, witches, ghosts, fiendish jack-o-lanters a-glow, candles, Autumn leaves, gnarled trees with finger-like branches, skeletons, and spiders.

No home is complete without the presence of a glowing jack-o-lantern at the door or a window, to greet passersby and guests. Decorate your home in harvest colors of orange, brown, black, purple, or red. Dress your windows up with cobwebs and spiders, black cats, and skeletons. Let the white silhouettes of ghosts sway in the breeze in trees in your front yard. Before you know it, you will have compliments around the neighborhood!

Skeletons and candles are two of the oldest vintage Halloween decorations. The ancient druids, Celtic fortune tellers of their day, dressed in animal heads and skins to do so. That, coupled with the fact that Halloween signifies the return of departed souls, evolved into the association of skeletons with Halloween. Candles have long been used in helping welcome or guide the dead during that night in hollowed-out pumpkins, known as jack-o-lanterns. Since the holiday is also directly related with the passing of Autumn into Winter, it makes sense that leaves, trees, and creeping spiders also represent Halloween. Through the passing of the centuries and cultures, the superstition of black cats being bad luck, witches, and ghosts have gradually become part of what we know as this spooky day of Halloween.
