Halloween allows for true individual expression and creativity. Yet as the sun sets, we see the mass production industry at its best. Many little clones run around from door to door sporting identical costumes and themes. And cute as this may be, for some, it is not the desired effect. So how do you come up with truly unique Halloween costume ideas?
The only way to spark unique Halloween costume ideas is to think out of the box. Even if you want to expand on a traditional theme, it can become unusual with your own individual touches. Witches don’t have to glow with green faces or wear black apparel. Pumpkins don’t have to be orange. Or perhaps you want a costume that doesn’t even have traditional roots.
The really fun element of Halloween is that there are no constraints. You can be a laptop computer if you can figure out how to create the costume! It is undeniable that the most entertaining and clever costumes are the ones that reflect unique Halloween costume ideas. With a little faith in your own creativity, the ideas should flow.
Sometimes the easiest way to invent that perfect costume is simply to go shopping! Craft stores are full of inexpensive possibilities, as are dollar stores. It doesn’t have to be meant for a costume to be used on a costume! So whether you decide to go with a traditional flare or a truly original theme, remember that one little surprise can transform your costume from the everyday to the truly astounding!
Here are some ideas
Pick a historical event or era, or a cultural group. The options are endless, considering the wide range of events that have taken place, and the many nations there are that make up this world as we know it. You could be a Roman or Greek god/goddess, a German composer, an English bobby (guard), or a Celtic druid. You do not even have to dress as a specific person, just a generalized character.
Other unique adult Halloween costumes can come from just about every aspect of life. Trying picking characters from popular or most common television commercials. There are a lot of bizarre people and animal spokesmen for a variety of products on the market. Why not dress as a Serta sheep, the Geiko gecko, the Energizer bunny, a Chia pet, or perhaps the Orkin man? You can also create your own interpretations or spoofs off of clichs, nursery rhymes, disorders, controversial issues, or jokes. The best part is, you can find many of the accessories for your costume at home, without unnecessary spending on a costume that someone else might also wear. Plus, you can use discarded items or even recyclable resources from the outdoors and dispose of them later.
For families seeking unique Halloween costume ideas, you do not have to look further than your own front door! Why go to the store and purchase costumes that will only get used once (or get used EVERY year until they fall apart) when you can make inexpensive and creative ones with existing items you have in your home? That way, when Halloween is over, you can get rid of the remnants without a hassle or losing out on a lot of money.
In order to come up with unique Halloween costume ideas, first brainstorm yours and your family’s interests. Try not to think of the "usual" sports, movies, or music themes, and go for your own twist, to make any theme comical, scary, or fun. If you like traveling, how about dressing as a tourist? You can be a traveler to a warm climate with sunglasses, a hat, a map sticking out of your pocket, smear sun block on your face, and carry a duffel bag or backpack for toting your candy around.
Are you the chef in your house? Then dress as the grill-master, or possibly a cook. Wear an apron with pockets, and include cooking utensils such as a rolling pin, tongs, spatula, wooden spoons, measuring cups, or whatever you can hang out of the pockets. For the grill-master costume, you can include fake hot dogs links around your neck, or spear a sausage on a grill fork at your side. For a cook, sprinkle some white flour, cocoa, or powdered sugar on your face and on the apron, and wear oven mitts.
Some unusual Halloween Costume Ideas
Unusual Halloween costumes might take a bit more work to assemble, but are worth the effort. Instead of the standard witches, ghosts, zombies, or movie characters, you can do something totally different. How about dressing as something from your favorite board or card game? Here are two ways you could create such unusual Halloween costumes, using household items and other odds and ends.
ROLL THE DIE – Wear white shoes and a white long-sleeved knit shirt or turtleneck, and white long underwear or pants, underneath a cardboard box large enough for you to wear, to expose only your head, arms, and legs. Paint the box white, and use black or colored paint to create a die with numbers, numerical dots, letters, or words. For fun, you can also hand out cards, tokens, or pawns from the game to those around you, especially if you want to dress in costume while handing out candy to trick-or-treaters who come your way.
TAKE A CARD – Wear a long-sleeved shirt and pants, and shoes in the overall color of your playing card. Fold a large sheet of poster board in half lengthwise to cut a hole for your head to fit through OR connect two sheets of poster board lengthwise at your shoulders, leaving a space for your head to fit through. For a Trivial Pursuit card, display actual questions from a card on the poster board facing you, with the answers on the opposite sheet on your back. For an Uno card, Dress in black, and paint the card accordingly. You can do this with just about any other game with phrase cards.
Using your imagination, there is no end to how many unusual Halloween costumes you could create!
