How to Choose a Theme For Your Costume Party

Are you planning on hosting a theme costume party, but still undecided on what theme to use? Nowadays, there are hundreds of theme ideas readily available on the internet and on your favorite costume shops. Some of the most popular themes range from the renaissance period, angels and demons, the ancient times, current events, and even politics! Each theme has its own pros and cons and aren’t really fit to be used at any time. It depends on the current time and season, and the guests who will be coming. And of course, it depends on YOU so you have to plan cautiously.

Know first when and where the party will be held. You can’t hold a Hawaiian theme costume party in the middle of the winter season, nor a Halloween themed one in April! Also inspect the site where the event will be held, check if it can accommodate all the decorations for your chosen theme, and if the theme costumes they’ll be wearing won’t make them too uncomfortable! If the location is a bit cool, then don’t choose a theme where the women’s costumes would be probably light or won’t be covering much skin, or for the men’s costumes where they might not wear anything on top.

Decide on who you’ll be inviting to the party. If it’s a children’s theme costume party, the theme should be appropriate for their age group. Popular choices as costumes for children would include animals, superheroes, cartoon characters, or parts of the nature like trees, plants and fairies. For the early adults or teens, most of them would want to wear women’s costumes that would reveal more skin, or would reveal more of their personality. They can imitate their favorite celebrities and characters in the movies and TV, their favorite and least favorite professors, priests, prostitutes, and the more famous pirates!

The invitations should be sent to the guests around 4-5 weeks prior to the event so as to provide them with ample time to get the desired costumes. If the guests are invited at a date near to the event, the guests might turn up unprepared wearing something that is otherwise nice, however not appropriate for the party! Neither the invites should be sent out too early as there is every chance of the guest to loose the invitation card and forget about the party and recalling everything only a few days before!

A good idea is to mention the list of costumes on the invitation card itself. This will not only make the guest choose the right costume but will also save them form wearing a wrong costume which might make them feel excluded in the party. Also if you are familiar with any of the costume shops owner, don’t forget them to mention the address of the shop and the contact information. This will enable the guests to get the costumes at one place and they will not have to hop from store to store for the right thing. They can get the costumes at discounted rates and will surely get the right costume as the shop owner will aware of the theme (you should have told him)

It is for sure that you will be expecting everyone in a costume matching with the theme of the party. So you can mention the same on the invitation card. You can also write a word of caution that whosoever will be a defaulter, will have to undergo a punishment. The punishment can also be as per the theme. For instance, if the theme is school or university, then whosoever will violate the rule will be made to write “I will never come to a costume party without any costume” or some similar stuff. If the theme is underwater, then you can soak him in water in the party.

Despite of the theme selected, try to make it fulfilled, inexpensive and memorable. Make the guests feel important by telling them that it does not matter if they were not able to get the desired costume, all that matters is their presence and is appreciated. After all, all memories will fade away leaving only the memories of the time you all spent together!
