Halloween and its celebration seem to have transformed into an age of astounding complexity. Choices for costumes seem endless, from the simplest cape to the full body disguise. We see costumes that blink in a facade of multi-colored lights, costumes that ring and costumes that truly mask the identity of the person within.
Trick-or-treaters, October parties and parades fill the air with cool Halloween costumes, many of which can boast total uniqueness.
October 31st has become a night of intrigue and expression. It’s a time where anything goes; where we can be as crazy or benign as we wish. Whether your pleasure is simply opening the door and filling the bags of wide-eyed children, or sporting a blue wig and glittery cape, the choices are as limitless as your imagination. That’s why finding the right Halloween costume or Halloween costume ideas can be overwhelming.
For some, it’s a piece of cake. They just seem to know exactly which persona they wish to adopt. Others agonize. The right way to find the perfect Halloween costume or Halloween costume ideas is to start early. Decide whether you will make your costume or whether you prefer to purchase an already made costume or accessories.
While some people buy their costumes off-the-shelf for the Halloween celebration, others design and build their own. There are lots of shops (even on the internet) that sell Halloween costumes. Design ideas are also available for those who want to do their own designs.
The Halloween garments can be as simple as a second-hand white sheet with two cut-out holes (for the eye) and a rope at the waist (as the belt) or it may have attached colored make-ups. Lots of other items of clothing can be sewn and worn provided they appear as weird as the designer wants.
Common accessories used as the costume for Halloween include haunted witch hair (wigs), flashing novelty teeth (for vampires), face paints, devil horns, wizard headgear, and weird tights and stockings.
The Halloween hairstyle is also designed to make the person look like a ghost or witch. There may be bald head with abnormal hair on some portions of the head, or there may be thick foliage of hair-like material covering the head and shoulders.
There are different costumes for kids which may not be as horrific, scary or ugly as that of the parents.
I remember a pre-school Halloween parade where adorable, yet predictable costumes skipped by in a blur of color and festivity. With superheroes, princesses and witches, the parade sported a sweet yet weary motif. Then out came the ham and cheese sandwich. A little girl was the spitting image of her lunch, and as this sandwich paraded with her contemporaries she brought laughter and smiles to us all. Her mother had created this work of art using inexpensive and lightweight foam. It was a costume to remember!
There is nothing more heartwarming than watching young children prepare for Halloween. All costumes seem so fresh and new to them. Little witches and pumpkins, devils and superheroes dot the streets with their presence as they anticipate full bags of candy. And yet as these children get older they start to see that the redundancy of these costumes can get boring, and they want something better. The search for different Halloween costumes begins!
Following a few basic safety guidelines will help your cool Halloween costumes to remain safe as well as fun. Make sure your fabric is hemmed at a reasonable length to avoid tripping. Also, if you choose to wear a mask as opposed to facial makeup, ensure that you have adequate visibility. Children generally do better without masks, and since there are many ways to decorate the face with makeup, that may be a safer alternative. Make sure your shoes are comfortable (for many trick-or-treaters this is critical) and that you have fresh batteries in your flashlight.
Halloween Ideas:
- Foam is a wonderful base for the homemade costume. Lightweight and inexpensive, it can be the base for a human piece of pizza or ham sandwich! Since any material can be attached to the foam, and a child can easily wear a foam-based costume anchored by string over the shoulders, creativity knows no boundaries.
- Want to be a zombie? For that fresh out of the ground look, take some old clothes, shred them, and rub dirt into them. If you don’t want to use dirt, brown paint works well.
- Make your own Fake Blood quickly, by adding red food coloring to corn syrup. Add small amounts of blue or green to make the liquid resemble real blood more closely.
- Achieve the appearance of someone who has been shocked and charged with electricity! Attach items like, socks, felt, paper, and string to yourself with velcro. Use hair jell to style your hair so that it stands straight up.
- How about a bodybuilding cheerleader? Muscle suits are available in most costume shops. Add a couple of pom poms and a cheerleading skirt and you have a rather bizarre look.
